Position Summary

The Division of the Center of Environmental Health Promotions (COEHP), within the Department of Internal Medicine, is seeking a full time motivated, outgoing, professional Medical Assistant to provide care in an outpatient clinic setting at the UNM Employee Occupational Health Services Clinic (EOHS). This position requires working the clinic front desk with the professional staff, patient registration, working with the New Mexico Risk Management Division on worker comp referrals, and working with the COEHP UNM CPR/AED Program.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Excellent communication skills and time management skills, are essential
  • The Medical Assistant prepares necessary equipment and assists the physician during examinations and treatments
  • Performs medical assistant evaluations of new and existing patients
  • Administers prescribed medications
  • Applies sterile dressings
  • Performs phlebotomy
  • Performs care coordination activities including patient scheduling and follow-up
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient records

Conditions of Employment
  • CPR Certified.
  • May be required to submit immunization records for review for required vaccines and TB testing.
  • UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
  • A pre-employment background investigation may be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; Medical Assistant certificate or currently enrolled in a medical, nursing or pharmacy program or at least 1 year of experience in a medical field.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working a clinic front desk
  • Experience performing venipuncture
  • Experience obtain referrals for outside medical treatment
  • Experience in patient education
  • Administering vaccinations: MMR, Tdap, Hep B, Varicella, Influenza (and others on a case-by-case basis)
  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite
  • CPR/AED training
  • Bilingual - Fluent in English and Spanish

Additional RequirementsExperience using Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems preferred. Bilingual (English-Spanish) is a plus.
