Position Summary

The UNM Risk and Safety Department is looking for a General Safety Manager under limited supervision, which will include developing plans, coordinates and manages campus safety programs, and safety training programs including the management and implementation of those programs to ensure the safety of the University's physical environment for employees, students and visitors, and to ensure compliance with applicable university policies and local, state, and federal regulations.

* Performs facility inspections for compliance with university policies, procedures, state and federal regulations and standards to ensure the environmental health and safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
* Provides guidance and consultation to clients and lower level environmental health and safety technicians regarding hazardous materials, radiation contamination, fire safety inspections, and other related activities.
* May specialize in one or more of the following areas: radiation safety, general safety, chemical safety, hazardous materials/waste, industrial hygiene, fire safety, or environmental affairs.

* Oversees the supervision of assigned personnel, which includes hiring, work allocation, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.

* Coordinates the division annual budget and assists in the development of capital expenditure budgets related to environmental, health and safety programs: develops and justifies budget requests.

* Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must obtain Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10 and/or 30 training within the first six months on the job and maintain certification status thereafter.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Qualifications:(More than 3 years)

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that areabove the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on ayear for year basis.
1. Experience communicating and interacting with regulatoryagencies and inspectors.
2. Advanced Excel experience and/or training.
3. Background in NFPA and OSHA interpretation and application.
4. Experience with building code and construction safety OSHA requirements.
5. OSHA 10 or 30 Certified.
6. HAZWOPER 40-hr Certified.
7. Experience with governmental procurement processes.
8. Experience supervising employees.
9. Experience with a work order tracking system.

Additional RequirementsSuccessful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.Specific personnel training is required for employees working with hazardous materials and hazardous waste.
