Position Summary

Under the direction of an anesthesiologist, administers local, inhalation, intravenous, and other anesthetics during surgical, obstetrical, or other medical procedures. Interprets and records patient's physiological and pharmacological status. Ability to provide continuity of care during the pre-op and post-op period and respond to life-threatening situations as required.

Being the only level 1 trauma center and tertiary referral center in the state, our facility provides a wide array of high acuity clinical cases. The University of New mexico School of Medicine's Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine is seeking an ANESTHESIOLOGIST ASSISTANT who, under the direct supervision of an anesthesiologist, will:

  • administer local, inhalation, intravenous, and other anesthetics during surgical, obstetrical, or other medical procedures.
  • interpret and record patient's physiological and pharmacological status.
  • apply their ability to provide continuity of care during the pre-op and post-op period and respond to life-threatening situations, as required.
  • participate in administrative affairs, research, and clinical instruction.
  • collect preoperative data and perform physical examinations.
  • insert venous, arterial, and other invasive catheters.
  • securing and managing the airway.
  • manage supportive therapy such as intravenous fluids and blood products.
  • make anesthetic adjustments using intra-operative monitoring modalities.
  • provide a safe transition from the operating room to the recovery area.

Conditions of Employment
  • CPR Certified.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Subject to credentialing process; must maintain credentialed status.
  • Must maintain certification status.
Minimum Qualifications

For Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA): State of New Mexico Licensed Registered Nurse or licensure pending as documented by temporary licensure or current RN licensure from a state participating in the multistate privilege to practice compact with New Mexico Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist; no previous directly related experience required.ORFor Anesthesiology Assistants-Certified (AA-C): Certified by Nat'l Commission for Cert of Anesthesiologist Assts (NCCAA) and Nat'l Bd of Med Examiners (NBME); Must maintain biannual certification through the submission of Continuing Medical Education credits (CMEs); NM Licensure as Anesthesiologist Assistant; no previous directly related experience required.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
