Position Summary

The UNMHealth Sciences Center Chief Information Office is looking for an IT SupportTech 3 (Network Technician) to provide installation services, maintenance andtechnical support for all network related equipment including network routers,switches, wireless access points and associated equipment across the UNM HealthSciences Center.

The Network Technician will provide support for network systems with an emphasis on physical hardwareinstallation and maintenance and layer 1 support of the education and researchbuildings across the UNM Health Sciences Center. This position is not responsible for anycritical health care delivery systems. The position is not required to be on-call, but requires flexibilitywith scheduling installations and support outside standard business hours. The position requires the ability to lift andmaneuver up to 50 lbs during equipment moves and installation.

Responsibilitiesand duties include, but are not limited to:
-Assistingin hardware installation and repairs as needed including planning,configuration and coordination with users.
-Assistingwith annual inventory control including the decommissioning and disposal ofsurplus equipment.
-Workingwith IT Analysts in the network configuration of servers, storage, wirelessaccess points and other IT devices within the data center, research labs andclassrooms.
-Respondingto Help Desk requests while maintaining a commitment to consistently providingresponsive, high quality customer service to IT customers, academic departmentsand end users.

The successfulapplicant will have strong communication skills, knowledge of Cisco and Junipernetwork hardware and configurations, practical experience and skill in layer 1aspects of network support including troubleshooting and repairing cable runsand punch downs. The position requires a clear sense of customer service, athorough understanding of the values, practices and procedures found in anacademic health sciences center and a commitment to ongoing collaboration withtechnical staff.

Conditions of Employment
  • Specialty licensure/certification may be required, as specified by the department.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Higher education and/or experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications:

  • Previous experience as a network or telecommunications technician
  • Familiarity with Cisco and Juniper network hardware and how to configure
  • Strong diagnostic and problem solving skill to troubleshoot networkissues, bottlenecks and failures
  • Experience with layer 1 troubleshooting and repair
  • General knowledge of networks (LAN/WAN, TCP/IP protocols, DNS, DHCP)
  • Experience working in data centers and telecommunications rooms
  • Good communication skills
