Position Summary

The Department of Pathology at the University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) is seeking qualified applicants for an open-rank clinician-educator track faculty position in the Transfusion Medicine Division. The successful applicant will receive an academic appointment at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine at a rank commensurate with their experience, and opportunities for laboratory directorships will be available.

For consideration, the candidate must have strong knowledge and experience in transfusion medicine, including therapeutic apheresis, stem cell collection and processing, immunohematology, transfusion products management, and regulatory compliance. Experience in laboratory hemostasis is also desirable but not required.

The applicant will report to the current Medical Director of the Blood Bank and share clinical coverage and educational responsibilities with the other members of the Transfusion Division, including didactics and service-related teaching for pathology and laboratory medicine residents and interdepartmental teaching of Medical School students, residents, and fellows (e.g., anesthesia, internal medicine, nephrology, hematology/oncology, etc.).

The Transfusion Medicine Division supports the University of New Mexico Health and Sciences Center, which includes a comprehensive cancer center and UNMH. UNMH is a 527-bed tertiary hospital and the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the state located in the middle of Albuquerque. UNMH specializes in trauma, burns, high-risk obstetrics, cardiothoracic surgery, adult and pediatric hematology/oncology, renal transplant, stem cell transplantation, and neonatal intensive care. UNMH’s blood bank is accredited by CAP and AABB. It transfuses approximately 17,000 blood products annually to adult and pediatric populations. The apheresis consultation service performs approximately 800-1000 procedures annually, including inpatient and outpatient red cell and plasma exchanges, extracorporeal photopheresis, leukocytapheresis, including autologous/allogeneic stem cell transplants, and other cellular therapies, including CAR-T.

The successful applicant will work in cooperation with TriCore Reference Laboratories, a nonprofit organization sponsored by University Hospital and Presbyterian Medical Services, to provide medical oversight for transfusion service operations. TriCore is New Mexico’s largest reference laboratory and one of the largest clinical laboratories in the United States (www.tricore.org).
