The Department of Internal Medicine and the Department of Surgery at the University of New Mexico are seeking a lead endocrinologist for our Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery service line. The University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) is the primary affiliate of the UNM School of Medicine and is the primary provider of tertiary and quaternary care in New Mexico as well as portions of surrounding states. It serves a population of roughly 2.5 million people.
UNMH is a major referral center for both routine and complicated surgical disorders of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. We perform approximately 300 thyroid and parathyroid surgeries annually as well as a considerable number of outpatient visits, fine needle aspirations, ultrasounds, etc.
The UNM Health Science Center (UNMHSC) is one of only 29 institutions nationally that has both an NIH (NCI) designated Cancer Center (Comprehensive Cancer Center) and an NIH sponsored Clinical Translational Science Center.
This position is being recruited at any academic rank on the Clinician Educator track.
This endocrinologist will work on a multidisciplinary team with surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, oncologists and other physicians involved in care of thyroid and parathyroid disorders with the aim of providing high-quality, multi-disciplinary care to patients, creating research opportunities, and providing an exceptional learning environment for medical trainees at all levels.
We are recruiting a lead endocrinologist for this program. This is a superb opportunity for an endocrinologist interested in an academic career to join a focused, collaborative, tertiary level practice devoted to superlative patient care.
Outpatient services will be based at the UNM Cancer Center, a state-of-the-art facility with beautiful clinic spaces and ample resources for patient care and clinical research.
The clinical aspects of the position are primarily outpatient - there are minimal inpatient and "on-call" responsibilities. The atmosphere at UNMH is relaxed and collegial while still maintaining an emphasis on providing quality patient care.
Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a culturally rich and naturally beautiful metropolitan area. Year-round good weather and easy access to the outdoors (the Sandia mountain wilderness is 20 minutes from UNM) make Albuquerque an incredible area for outdoor enthusiasts. New Mexico has a great diversity in landscapes and wildlife, containing six of the seven "Life Zones" on Earth. The Sandia Mountains, for example, contain arid, rocky areas, high alpine meadows (with lots of wildflowers in the spring and summers), and forests of aspen and oak.
