Position Summary

The University of New Mexico (UNM), College of Nursing (CON) is seeking a dynamic leader to serve as the inaugural chair of the department of Rural Health and Health Equity at the UNM Health Sciences Center (HSC). The chair will lead the proposed department in all aspects of academic and scholarly activity and serve as a key member of the College’s leadership team. This includes providing strategic leadership to develop a future vision of the department to enhance current and emerging programs and the stewardship of resources, personnel, and collaboration within the CON, UNM, and across the state.

The chair will collaborate with administration, faculty, and staff to foster a commitment to excellence in academic programming, scholarship, and clinical practice. The chair will be responsible for the recruitment, retention, and professional development of faculty and staff within the department. This is a leadership position, which includes active participation in academic affairs; commitment to diversity, equity and Inter-professional and community engagement. The Chair will mentor excellence across research and scholarship, teaching, and community engagement. This position provides a vital role in the development of research, scholarship, and clinical programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels, as well as the successful mentorship of faculty and students

The incumbent will be expected to maintain an active program of scholarship at the highest levels with a consistent record of extramural funding support appropriate for tenured faculty at the rank of associate or full professor. A PhD or research doctorate is required.

The UNM College of Nursing, located in Albuquerque, NM, ranks in the top 15% of nursing programs in the country. With over 1,000 enrolled students, the college offers pre- and post-licensure baccalaureate, master’s, post-master’s, and doctoral programs. Program offerings include the state’s premiere Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs; master’s and post-master’s programs across seven APRN concentrations, nurse educators, and nurse administrators; and the New Mexico Nurse Education Consortium baccalaureate curriculum.

The CON is part of a vibrant HSC, which includes New Mexico’s only Level-1 trauma center. The HSC provides an exceptional education for more than 1,500 students each year in 21 different health fields. The HSC is known for innovative research with more than $165 million in extramural research funding. The HSC has an established, NIH-funded, Clinical and Translational Science Center that provides extensive opportunities and resources to support collaborative research in a variety of interest areas.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • A PhD or related research doctorate
  • Record of extramural funding in a focused area of scholarship related to rural health and/or health equity
  • Scholarly experience in rural health or health equity
  • Experience mentoring and evaluating faculty to foster an environment of research/scholarship

Preferred qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience engaging in public relations and philanthropic activities to promote and enhance the visibility and support for the department
  • Demonstrated evidence of building and promoting relationships across multiple academic departments and institutions and engage communities to promote independent collaboration
  • Degree in nursing
  • Demonstrated evidence of financial management, contract negotiation, and driving strategic initiatives to successful outcomes
  • Demonstrated leadership in the mentorship, development, and advocacy of faculty and the identification and recruitment of diverse students, staff, and faculty
  • Demonstrated record of working with underserved and marginal populations
  • Experience in providing constructive guidance and practical feedback
  • Demonstratedstrong track record as a consensus builder and collaborator to meet theorganization mission and vision
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Success in creating and maintaining a positive academic learning environment
