Position Summary

Associate Director Microbiology/Infectious Disease

The Department of Pathology, University of New Mexico, is seeking a highly motivated faculty member to serve as the Associate Director of the Clinical Microbiology/Infectious Disease Laboratory based at TriCore Reference Laboratories. This position is open rank and track (tenure or clinical) based on the candidate’s experience. The successful candidate will serve as the Director of Molecular Microbiology for TriCore Reference Laboratories. They will work closely with and be a resource for infectious disease services, hospital epidemiology, infection control, and other clinical services for the University of New Mexico Hospitals and affiliated local institutions. The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the mission of the Division of Laboratory Medicine in quality assurance and outreach activities, in addition to educating students and clinical trainees. Teaching and mentoring responsibilities include infectious disease fellows, pathology residents, as well as other fellows, residents, medical students, and technologists.

The successful applicant will work in cooperation with TriCore Reference Laboratories, a nonprofit organization which is sponsored by University of New Mexico Hospitals and Presbyterian Hospitals and includes a large commercial arm. TriCore is one of the largest clinical laboratories in the United States ( TriCore is committed to the strategic direction of enhancing the infectious disease service through molecular testing, automation and Next-Generation Sequencing.

The Department of Pathology ( ranks within the top academic departments of pathology in the United States with diverse, well supported basic and clinical research programs, an extensive array of clinical services, and a comprehensive education mission. Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD, MD or MD/PhD degree or equivalent
  • Board certified or board eligible in Medical Microbiology by either the American Board of Medical Microbiology or the American Board of Pathology
  • Eligible to work in the United States.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A minimum of two years’ experience in clinical microbiology/infectious disease
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in a teaching/academic setting
  • A record of achievement in molecular infectious disease diagnostics, including Next-Generation Sequencing
  • A record of scholarly achievement related to infectious disease
