Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC), one of the nation’s 49 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, and the UNM School of Medicine, invite applications from highly motivated academic physicians or physician-scientists to provide leadership of the UNMCCC Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Clinical Programs. Applications are invited from mid-career and senior physicians (M.D. or combined M.D/Ph.D. or equivalent; Board Certification in Medical Oncology) who may be appointed at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. Faculty rank and appointment in the UNM School of Medicine will be commensurate with experience and accomplishments. The successful applicant will be an accomplished Medical Oncologist with significant experience and expertise in the multidisciplinary clinical management of breast cancer patients, in clinical/translational research, in the design and conduct of cancer prevention and therapeutic interventional clinical trials in breast cancer, and in clinical leadership and management.

The UNMCCC Research Programs have outstanding investigators engaged in population science and cancer control research in New Mexico’s unique multiethnic populations who have significant disparities in breast cancer incidence and mortality, in discovery-focused laboratory investigations, and in translational and clinical research focused on the development of investigator-initiated and early phase clinical trials. Significant resources, including Endowed Chairs and Professorships, outstanding research resources, clinical research and clinical trials infrastructure, and comprehensive start-up packages are available.The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute (NCI) Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. The 134 oncology physicians, 122 cancer research scientists, and staff are particularly focused on discovering the causes and the cures for cancers that disproportionately affect the people of the American Southwest - primarily Hispanic, American Indian, and Non-Hispanic White - with strikingly different patterns of cancer incidence, mortality and disparity. The Center treated 12,000 unique patients in FY17, 15% of whom participated in therapeutic interventional studies and 35% of whom participated in interventional studies. The UNMCCC has outstanding research programs in Cancer Control and Cancer Health Disparities; Cancer Genetics, Epigenetics, and Genomics; Cancer Cell and Systems Biology; and Cancer Therapeutics. These programs house several national centers including: The Molecular Discovery and High Throughput Target Screening Center (nmmlsc.health.unm.edu), one of the nation’s 6 Chemical Biology Consortium Centers of Excellence in The NCI NExT Program; The New Mexico Center for the Spatiotemporal Modeling of Cell Signaling (stmc.health.unm.edu), one of 13 NIH National Centers for Systems Biology; and a NIH Clinical and Translational Sciences Center. Rich collaborations with UNMCCC partners (Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories; Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute) with unparalleled computing and technology infrastructure enrich our research endeavors. The UNMCCC is the center of a collaborative statewide cancer clinical trials and health delivery research network and is funded by a NCI NCORP Grant (Minority/Underserved), and is also a member of the ORIEN National Cancer Precision Medicine Network (http://oriencancer.org/). Center members have conducted more than 60 statewide community-based cancer education, prevention, screening, and behavioral intervention studies involving more than 10,000 New Mexicans. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MD or combined MND/PhD or equivalent degree with board certification in Internal Medicine or Surgery
  • Board certification in Medical Oncology
  • An accomplished breast clinician in the practice of Oncology
  • Strong leadership skills and experience in clinical operations
  • Academic accomplishments commensurate with appointment to Associate for Full Professor
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S.; this is not a J-1 Visa opportunity

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Leadership experience and experience building multidisciplinary clinical and research teams
  • Experience in the design and conduct of breast cancer clinical trials, investigator-initiated trails, and early phase clinical trials and interventions
  • Experience and expertise in the education, training and mentoring of residents, fellows, and junior faculty
