Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) and the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology at the UNM School of Medicine invite physicians and physician scientists who are medical oncologists with experience and expertise in experimental therapeutics, the development of novel targeted cancer therapies, and the design and conduct of early phase human cancer clinical trials. The successful applicant will have training, experience, and expertise in early phase clinical trials (first-in-human, phase zero, and phase I) and will be expected to further develop the UNMCCC Early Phase Clinical Trial Program in solid tumors, with an emphasis on rapid and informative translation from the bench-to-bedside-and-back with new therapeutics discovered and developed in concert with the UNMCCC Research Programs.

The UNMCCC has an integrated discovery operation involving drug repurposing, ligand-directed targeting, personalized genomics, and biotechnology/nanotechnology. Superb collaborative opportunities exist with the UNMCCC Consortium partners in high-end technology and advanced material or computer sciences (at Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories) and GLP toxicology (Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute). This is an Open Rank, Open Track position. Faculty rank and appointment will be commensurate with accomplishments. Excellent salaries, endowed positions, and start up packages are available.The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute (NCI) Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. The 134 oncology physicians, 122 cancer research scientists, and staff are particularly focused on discovering the causes and the cures for cancers that disproportionately affect the people of the American Southwest - primarily Hispanic, American Indian, and Non-Hispanic White - with strikingly different patterns of cancer incidence, mortality and disparity. The Center treated 12,000 unique patients in FY17, 15% of whom participated in therapeutic interventional studies and 35% of whom participated in interventional studies. The UNMCCC has outstanding research programs in Cancer Control and Cancer Health Disparities; Cancer Genetics, Epigenetics, and Genomics; Cancer Cell and Systems Biology; and Cancer Therapeutics. These programs house several national centers including: The Molecular Discovery and High Throughput Target Screening Center (, one of the nation’s 6 Chemical Biology Consortium Centers of Excellence in The NCI NExT Program; The New Mexico Center for the Spatiotemporal Modeling of Cell Signaling (, one of 13 NIH National Centers for Systems Biology; and a NIH Clinical and Translational Sciences Center. Rich collaborations with UNMCCC partners (Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories; Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute) with unparalleled computing and technology infrastructure enrich our research endeavors. The UNMCCC is the center of a collaborative statewide cancer clinical trials and health delivery research network and is funded by a NCI NCORP Grant (Minority/Underserved), and is also a member of the ORIEN National Cancer Precision Medicine Network ( Center members have conducted more than 60 statewide community-based cancer education, prevention, screening, and behavioral intervention studies involving more than 10,000 New Mexicans. Minimum Qualifications:

  • MD or combined MD/PhD or equivalent degree with board certification in Internal Medicine
  • Board certification/eligibility in Medical Oncology and or/Hematology
  • Experience and /or medical oncology fellowship training in the design and conduct of early clinical trials and investigator-initiated clinical trials
  • Understanding of and /or experience in the NIH/NCI clinical trials system, biotechnology start-up environment, and pharmaceutical industry
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in clinical trials and translational research
  • Experience in clinical trials regulatory requirements and affairs
