Position Summary

The Department of Neurology at University of New Mexico is seeking a Vascular Neurologist with clinical expertise to join our successful and expanding multidisciplinary team emphasizing acute stroke treatment, secondary prevention, and stroke recovery at the premier academic center in New Mexico. The new physician will join an energetic team of four stroke physicians, five neuro-intensivists, three endovascular specialists, and two dedicated Advanced Practice Providers, all of them sub-specialty trained and BC/BE. The University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) is a fully thrombectomy capable Joint Commission of Hospital Accreditation certified Advanced Primary Stroke Center with American Heart Association Gold designation. UNMH is the major transfer center for the Southwest and provide innovative and evidence-based care for 600+ acute stroke patients from New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, and Colorado per year. UNMH has a designated 24-bed Neurocritical Care Unit with advanced multimodal monitoring capabilities is at the core of our service. Unique research possibilities exist within our Center of Excellence for Cerebral Cavernous Malformations (CCM) and as part of the NIH StrokeNet trials network.

Clinical responsibilities include direct patient care in busy clinical settings, ward and consult attending supervision of residents, fellows and medical students and midlevel providers. The incumbent will be expected to have an interest in education, and participation in teaching programs for medical students, residents and our vascular neurology fellows. Individuals with interest in basic and/or clinical translational research in stroke are encouraged to apply. Based on qualifications leadership opportunities may be available.

UNM Hospital is the tertiary care center for the State and the only Level 1 Trauma Center and Burn Center in New Mexico. The Department has 26 full-time and part-time attending physicians and is home to well-established Residency and Fellowship programs.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MD degree or equivalent
  • Completed neurology residency in an accredited program
  • Completed or be currently enrolled in a vascular neurology fellowship
  • Must be eligible for licensure in the State of New Mexico
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong clinical and teaching skills in vascular neurology
