Position Summary

The University of New Mexico School of Law invites applications for tenured or tenure-track faculty position in its Southwest Indian Law Clinic (SILC), starting in the Fall of 2020.

SILC, one of the mandatory clinics in the UNM Clinical Law Program, provides high quality legal representation and clinical practice experience in Indian country. SILC is proactive in the advocacy, promotion and establishment of indigenous peoples’ rights. SILC students may represent individual clients and/or tribal groups or Indian communities. Through representation, students may be exposed to issues arising from historical oppression, poverty, and under-representation and other issues related to culture, race, and socio-economic status in the legal system. Students are taught to approach legal solutions premised on tribal sovereignty, cultural rights, or traditional internal law, as well as, general legal principles. The professor will supervise students in their representation of clients, teach, and administer SILC case and project work.

Entry-level and experienced clinicians are encouraged to apply. Academic rank and salary will be based on experience and qualifications but it is a tenured or tenure-track position.

Offering a J.D. degree, cross-disciplinary dual degrees, and a Masters of Legal Studies, the UNM School of Law is nationally recognized for innovative classes that combine law practice skills training with doctrinal instruction and a 10:1 student-to-faculty ratio.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must possess a J.D. or equivalent legal degree.
  • 3-5 years of practice experience.
  • Licensed to practice in any jurisdiction.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in clinical teaching; Indian law practice and tribal community contacts or experience (including litigation experience and representation of Native individuals and tribal entities).
  • Training and experience in supervision.
  • Demonstrated excellence or the promise of excellence in the practice of federal Indian law and/or tribal law.
  • Experience in teaching of law and/or academic scholarship.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
