Position Summary

The Department of Earthand Planetary Sciences (EPS) and the Institute of Meteoritics (IOM) at theUniversity of New Mexico invites applications for an Open Rank faculty positionin the field of Earth and Planetary Materials to begin in August 2025. This isa full-time, Open Rank professorship focusing on the petrology or mineralphysics of the Earth and/or other planets. Applicants must have a PhD in Geoscience, Planetary Science, or arelated field by date of appointment. For best consideration, all applicationmaterials must be received by December 16, 2024.

Ideallythe successful candidate’s research will align well with a number excitingcurrent and future activities supported by NASA and NSF such as the ArtemisProgram and Mars Exploration Program, as well as relevant activities outlinedin "Vision for NSF Earth Sciences 2020-2030: Earth in Time". The Department ofEarth and Planetary Sciences has a fulltime tenured/tenure track faculty of 13and offers undergraduate degrees in Earth and Planetary Sciences andEnvironmental Science, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Earth and PlanetarySciences. The Institute of Meteoritics, founded in 1944, was one of the firstinstitutions in the world devoted to the study of meteorites, and itsscientists carry out research on planetary materials, solar system formationand evolution, and participate in NASA missions of exploration. EPS and IOMfacilities and instrumentation are located on the UNM Main Campus and feature EPMA,SIMS, SEM, TEM, FIB, x-ray diffraction and tomography, radiogenic isotope,stable isotope, noble gas isotope, and analytical chemistry laboratories.

Applications mustdemonstrate evidence of research and teaching experience in Earth and Planetarymaterials, petrology, or mineral physics. The new faculty member will teach undergraduate and graduate courses inpetrology, mineral physics, or planetary science, supervise master and doctoralstudents (including comprehensive exams), and contribute to core, requiredundergraduate and graduate courses.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. inGeoscience, Planetary Science, or closely related field by start date ofappointment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strength in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels
  • Demonstrated publication record in peer-reviewed journals
  • Evidence or potential to establish a vigorous and externally funded research program
  • Ability to mentor diverse students at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels
  • Ability to contribute to other research and/or teaching areas in the department
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities
