Position Summary

The University of New Mexico-Valencia is accepting applications for the position of Police Officer.  This position will:

  • Provide information, directions and escort for faculty, staff, visitors and students on the campus as needed
  • Enforce local, state, and federal laws and ensure compliance with University Policies
  • Investigate and document crimes/incidents
  • Document and preserve evidence, and provide legal testimony in a court of law
  • Patrol Campus and provide victim/witness assistance, and serve as crime prevention officer
  • Provide comprehensive law enforcement services for the Valencia Campus, to include locking and unlocking buildings as needed, patrols on foot or mobile equipment, and monitoring traffic as directed to ensure compliance with campus driving policies
  • Write incident reports, issue citations, and provide local law enforcement with information when necessary

This position involves some exposure to unruly persons, environmental hazards, physical risks and adherence to the force continuum that will achieve the intended result, without causing injury or damage to property or personnel.  The above statements reflect the general duties considered necessary to describe the principle functions of the position identified and shall not be considered inclusive of all work requirements that may be inherent in the position. The position involves shift-work and varying days off, subject to seniority bid, with hours based on campus needs. Weekend work will be required. 

Located about 30 miles south of Albuquerque in rural Valencia county, The University of New Mexico-Valencia Campus is a two-year branch campus of The University of New Mexico which functions as a community college in the region and is designated a Hispanic Serving Institution.  With an emphasis on teaching excellence, Valencia Campus offers academic transfer programs, technical vocational programs, Adult Basic Education, and Dual Credit High School/College courses to Valencia and Socorro Counties.  The faculty and staff serve a student body of over 2,000 students per semester.

Conditions of Employment
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must maintain certification status.
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the POA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited law enforcement academy; no previous experience required.Certification/LicensureState of New Mexico Certified Law Enforcement Officer, or eligibility for Certification by waiver.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Law Enforcement and security procedures (handcuffing, baton, and chemical agents)
  • Experience with security/law enforcement (at least two years), writing damage/loss incident reports
