Position Summary

Summary

The UNM Prevention and Population Sciences (PPS) division is seeking a recent college graduate (bachelor’s degree) interested in receiving real-world experience conducting community-engaged prevention research, program evaluation, and public health surveillance. The Professional Intern position is designed to provide training and experience for a recent college graduate in order to prepare them for a professional position in a field related to health promotion and the prevention of disease and injury. The position will be part of a motivated multi-disciplinary team conducting research studies and evaluation to improve the health and wellbeing of those living in New Mexico. The position will assist the team in all aspects of the projects which focus on measuring the health risks , improving health care, and addressing health-related social needs for New Mexicans. Duties include assisting with quantitative data collection, management, and analysis. The position will also contribute to the preparation of materials to communicate and disseminate project findings. Work will be completed under the supervision of PPS faculty and staff. This position is intended to provide the intern with the skills and knowledge needed to perform the duties of Research Scientist 1 or HS/Associate Scientist 1 position at PPS in the future.

Duties and responsibilities for this position may include:

  1. Assist with the production of Youth Risk & Resiliency Survey (YRRS) County and District reports in R, and their posting and secure distribution.
  2. Use REDCap and Qualtrics for creation and implementation of surveys for multiple projects, including setting up SQL tracking systems.
  3. Contributes to the analyses of qualitative and quantitative data related to the funded projects under the supervision of faculty and senior professional staff.
  4. Set up survey websites including administrators’ FAQ page and instructional videos.
  5. Process completed surveys and output in analytic data set.
  6. Assist with creation of data dashboard for presenting surveillance survey results on website.
  7. Assist with cleaning and delivery of final YRRS files to partners such as Centers for Disease Control and NM Department of Health.
  8. Receives guidance, mentoring and training from professional personnel in the conduct of community-engaged prevention research and evaluation. 
  9. Provides other support for data collection and analysis. 
  10. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment
  • Must present transcripts prior to a formal offer being extended.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • This is a fixed-term position, typically up to 24 months.
Minimum Qualifications

Must have obtained a Bachelor's or higher level degree no more than 24 months prior to the date of hire OR if the Bachelor's (or higher level) degree was obtained more than 24 months prior to the date of hire, the individual must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's (or higher level) degree program; no previous work experience required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of R, SQL, Qualtrics, and REDCap. 
  • Experience creating websites and posting original maps, data dashboards and videos.
  • Experience conducting descriptive data analysis.  
  • Proficiency in Spanish.
