Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (HSC) Office for Community Health (OCH) contributes to HSC’s vision of working with community partners to improve health and health equity in New Mexico. The OCH oversees a range of programs, initiatives and activities that address statewide health priorities. One of these programs is the Community Health Workers Initiative (CHWI), which is an innovative program that seeks to improve the health of communities by training and supporting CHWs in a wide range of settings in New Mexico. CHWI includes key CHW programs: Pathways to a Healthy Bernalillo County (Pathways), Bernalillo County Adverse Childhood Events ACES), UNMH Resource Re-entry Center (RRC), Presbyterian Accountable Health Communities (AHC) Care, and the City of Albuquerque Intensive Case Management (ICM) contracts.

The OCH is seeking a values-driven, process-oriented CHWI program operations director with experience in CHW program implementation including: understanding of supervision support, coaching and mentoring for CHWs; ability to work with MCOs, clinics, non-profit organizations and other partners to increase CHW effectiveness; evaluation and monitoring of CHW programs; ability to develop CHW strategies and write grants for CHW programming and sustainability; and experience with budgets, grants and contracts management. The candidate will oversee both day-to-day operations and administrative functions of the CHWI, as well as provide the guidance and support for the programmatic and technical components of CHW programs.

This position will also be part of the OCH Executive Leadership Team to drive forward HSC strategies as related to community health. As such, the successful candidate will have the following qualities:

  • Ability to develop and support detailed operational plans and dashboards that can be tracked and integrated into the HSC Strategies
  • Proven track record of reaching goals, making effective organizational decisions and supporting a team to deliver measurable results
  • Experience building teams and leading a supportive, team-oriented organizational culture
  • Partnership experience to be able to grow the relationships and support effective programming and shared goals between CHWI and other partners such as the county, city, MCOs, and other depts within the HSC
  • Ability to identify areas in need of policy advocacy at city, county, and state levels that emerge as systemic problems or gaps as learned through implementation of CHWI programs and through collaborative involvement with community partners

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified,

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. At least five years of project management experience with a healthcare organization including MCOs;
  2. B.A. or higher in a health- or social sciences-related field;
  3. complex and integrated program planning, management and development for multiple state, regional, and/or national-level programs funded through contract(s)/grant(s);
  4. strategic representation and collaborative interaction with a wide range of high-level internal and external constituencies;
  5. establishment and administration of integrated program budgets, operating policies and standards, and management systems;
  6. establishment, development, and management of multiple program funding and resources with multi-million dollar budgets;
  7. strategic management and oversight of a team of program managers and staff in support of multiple program activities; and
  8. training, supporting and deploying community health workers.
