The CRO is undergoing a restructuring of positions, responsibilities, and tasks of some of the staff members to ensure compliant clinical research is conducted at the Cancer Center. The Program Specialist position will be responsible for:
1. Facilitate the scheduling, agendas and minutes for the monthly meetings of the Clinical Working Groups. Responsible for distributing all protocols and forms to the Principal Investigator and the CWG leader to complete for review and approval of all oncology studies activated at the Cancer Center. Updates Velos as appropriate with study status and current protocol, and votes on candidate trials.
2. Responsible for registering all applicable clinical trials on the federally mandated ClinicalTrials.gov website. After initial registration, have the responsibility to provide updates regarding amendments and accruals. Upon completion of the study, facilitate the reporting of outcome measures with the Pl. This includes downloading data and reports from Velos which includes subject data and adverse events and outcome measurements.
3. Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual accrual reports and graphs for the CRO Director, Associate Director for Clinical Research of the Cancer Center, and the NCORP Principal Investigator. Prepare weekly trial update reports as requested by the Technical Analyst.
4. Prepare protocol portfolio reports for the Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee's quarterly "Monitoring Meeting". which involves collecting and analyzing data then generating tables and graphs based on that analysis. Reports include overall accrual performance for each CWG and affiliate sites. This requires the download of all studies and accruals for the past year and identifying low enrolling studies for review by the PRMC.
5. Complete the Human Use Subcommittee Form for each clinical trial approved by the CWGs.
6. Develop protocol portfolio process maps to be utilized by each CWG, investigators, nurses, Research Nurses, and Research Coordinators. These maps allow faculty and staff to determine which research protocols may be applicable to a particular patient from time of diagnosis to (if applicable) disease progression.
The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its 124 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provide treatment to 65% of New Mexico’s cancer patients from all across the state and partner with community health systems statewide to provide cancer care closer to home. They treated 13,578 patients in 105,748 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of 1,610 patients participated in cancer clinical trials, including 696 patients who participated in clinical trials testing new cancer treatments that include tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The 132 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded $34.5 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects and published 301 high quality publications. Promoting economic development, they filed more than 30 new patents since FY16, and since 2010, have launched 11 new biotechnology start-up companies. Scientists associated with the UNMCCC Cancer Control & Disparities have conducted more than 60 statewide community-based cancer education, prevention, screening, and behavioral intervention studies involving more than 10,000 New Mexicans. Finally, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 230 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
