Position Summary

The Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a motivatedprofessional to serve as the Program Specialist to support the smooth operationof day-to-day research operations for one of departments two research units.

This individual will oversee the development and executionof the EM research team’s sample acquisition studies and ensure that projectmilestones are met. Additionally, the Program Specialist will superviseresearch coordinators, professional interns, student employees, and volunteersinvolved in human subject research projects.

The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal andcommunication skills, the ability to work effectively with a wide range ofpeople including study sponsors, principal investigators, clinical teams, andresearch and administrative staff and clinical staff and patients. Experienceworking in clinical research, familiarity with IRB submissions, maintainingregulatory compliance, and managing confidential information is essential.Strong organizational skills are required to effectively coordinate and manageresearch activities.

This position will involve direct patient interaction in theemergency department setting which may include conducting clinical assessments,drawing, processing, and testing blood samples, performing ECGs, and collectingresearch participant vital signs within the scope of the study protocols andtraining.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans and coordinates the development, implementation, and execution of small-scale contract or grant-funded programs and special projects to achieve the overall mission, goals, and objectives of the program.
  • Provides content expertise specific to the operations and objectives of the program, ensuring all activities and procedures adhere to established research protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Manages budgetary responsibilities for the program, ensuring that expenses do not significantly exceed $250,000 per fiscal year, and monitors program spending to maintain financial efficiency.
  • Serves as a liaison with internal and external constituencies on all matters relating to program activities; represents the University with respect to program activities on a local, regional, and/or national basis.
  • Provides technical guidance, consultation, and support related to program focus; provides day-to-day problem solving as necessary on day-to-day program-related needs and issues.
  • Advises on operating goals and objectives; identifies opportunities to enhance program operations in order to achieve greater efficiencies and effectiveness and to fulfill program objectives outlined within the contract/grant.
  • Supervises research coordinators, professional interns, student employees and volunteers, ensuring personnel follow appropriate guidelines and remain in protocol, institutional, and regulatory compliance.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties asassigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 6 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Medical experience or current license (EMT, RN, etc.) or experience working with Protected Health Information (PHI)
  • Familiarity with and implementation of project and program development and management
  • Ability to prepare and present training/informational material
  • Working knowledge and experience with Central IRB and Local IRB submissions
  • Completion of a Human Research Protections (HRP) Training and Good Clinical Practices curriculum or program
  • Research experience including the use of data collection software (REDCap, OpenClinica, etc.) and data base creation
