Position Summary

The Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS) is the University's learning assistance center. CAPS houses a Math/Science Tutoring program, an Online Tutoring program, a Learning Strategies Program, the Supplemental Instruction (SI) program, and a Writing and Language Center. A dynamic, interactive, student-centered organization, CAPS employs 150 students as tutors, SI leaders, receptionists, and Student Managers and serves over 6,000 individual students each year for more than 43,000 contact hours. CAPS is an extremely fast-paced, frenetic job environment with many locations, student employees, and student users to oversee.

Under general supervision:

Oversees operations of CAPS Math/Science Tutoring Program; Hires, supervises, and trains student employees; Develops program innovations for existing Math/Science Tutoring Program; Leads/Participates in dialogues within campus community and on a national level on tutoring and STEM education; Liaisons with campus communities to assess and meet academic support needs; Hires, trains, and evaluates tutors in accordance with a larger vision of the role of a learning center within the university; Schedules and oversees tutoring services at various locations in accord with program budget; Examines existing math and science tutor training and develops new training ideas; Assesses Math and Science Program effectiveness.

Additional participation in CAPS includes:
Supports the day-to-day maintenance of CAPS programs; problem-solves issues that arise while serving our student population; performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 6 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • MA in a STEM field or in a relevant field of study
  • Knowledge of current trends in STEM higher education
  • Experience with a university learning assistance center
  • Experience supervising and training student employees
  • Experience collaborating with university departments, faculty, and campus organizations
