Position Summary

UNM's IT Applications division focuses on delivering systems that are Reliable, Secure, Accessible, Innovative, and Effective. To do this, we center our work on Standardization, Automation, and Continuous Improvement. The IT Applications Operations team is seeking transformational candidates to fill a Programmer Analyst 3 position who will carry forward the division's focus. The Operations team manages application upgrades of our ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system and many other applications, works closely with vendors and customers, develops application monitoring, and supports the university's operational infrastructure with the Platforms team. We are also in the process of moving to a DevOps environment that will leverage automation and continuous integration and delivery to more effectively build, test, deploy, and support solutions.

This is a great opportunity for an independent thinking, technically savvy leader to first learn about the effective operational management of multiple of systems in a very large environment and then be involved in transitioning that environment to a DevOps infrastructure focused on automation and standard, repeatable processes. The ideal candidate will be motivated by this transition and the opportunity to learn existing processes and new technologies. Most importantly, the ideal candidate will be excited to be a leader in building the new IT infrastructure that will support UNM for years to come. Participation in on-call rotation for support of production environments is required.

Job Duties

  • Become expert in our ERP system and architecture, job scheduling system, knowledge management system, and standard operating procedures
  • Effectively lead the assessment and resolution of operational issues across the enterprise
  • Perform loading testing as technical lead per our quality assurance standards for new system implementations
  • Lead the implementation of complex application upgrades that include the research, scheduling, communication, implementation, and testing of upgrades between customers, IT, and the vendor
  • Participate on team that will transform application monitoring from the proactive response to warnings to a tool that will empower us to continually improve our technical architecture
  • Be a champion for the implementation of the DevOps environment and the development of associated processes
  • Transform the established infrastructure using automation and lead the incorporation of automated testing and security scans into the CI/CD pipeline
  • Create effective and readable documentation in our knowledge base leveraging different formats such as technical writing, diagrams, charts, and instructions to best communicate source material
  • Be a leader in the continual improvement of the division by offering recommendations on processes and existing systems

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 2 years of progressively responsible experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Higher education and/or experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success at transforming customer and infrastructure issues into stable, high performance, and well documented long term solutions
  • 5-6 years of experience installing, configuring, and upgrading applications, while documenting the process so it can be repeated in the future
  • 5-6 years of experience in leading a successful team to accomplish goals on time and on budget
  • 5-6 years of development experience using web scripting languages and managing web infrastructures
  • 5-6 years of development experience using Software Development Life Cycle with extensive database development using a strong SQL foundation. Oracle PL/SQL experience is a plus
  • 3-5 year of experience in scripting, running, and tuning load tests using JMeter
  • Demonstrated success in planning, scheduling, and communicating with customers on complicated projects
  • 3-4 years of scripting experience automating processes and deployments using bash and powershell (Both Windows and Red Hat environments)
  • Experience with planning and implementing an application monitoring system and creating effective dashboards for proactive system management; Solarwinds and Splunk experience is preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging with infrastructure and security teams to tune application availability, performance, and security
  • Experience with code repositories (Git), continuous integration tools (Jenkins) and the development and maintenance of Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery systems
  • 8-9 years of proven professional skills: strong, independent analytical skills, flexibility and ability to learn, communication to internal and external customers, operate in a dynamic team environment, ability to write technical documentation
  • Familiarity with middleware or service bus platforms to leverage data access and performance is a plus
