Position Summary

The UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center seeks a Project/Construction Mgr to join our Plant Operations team. The responsibilities of this position are as follows:

1. This position will lead Construction Services, managing programming, design, bidding, construction, and warranty phases of new Healthcare and pharmaceutical/scientific laboratory facilities, additions, and renovation projects as assigned while concurrently managing multiple simple to complex projects. Serves as primary or support liaison between client groups, consultants, and stakeholders. Fosters an environment and project team culture of interdepartmental collaboration/problem solving, innovative facility planning, budgeting, and scheduling, while minimizing operational service disruptions as a result of construction activities.

2. Assists in the preparation of Request for Proposal (RFP) and Scope of Work (SOW) documentation and participates in the selection of consultants, contractors, vendors, and other service providers. Evaluates and analyzes projects, including resources, schedule, and availability to determine the optimum project delivery model that provides best value for the owner. Coordinates project activities and utility service outages with affected stakeholders. Reviews Healthcare projects for constructability, code compliance, and completeness of documentation, according to phase objectives. Inspects construction to monitor progress, ensure conformance to plans, specification, and Environment of Care requirements. Oversees the work of external consultants for assigned projects; ensures that designs are consistent with planned objectives, relevant regulations (including NM Department of Health, and The Joint Commission accreditation standards), and University Standards.

3. Leads project administrative support activities including development and maintenance of job files and tracking of project schedule and budget. Receives pay requests from consultants, contractors, and vendors, and approves for payment; reviews, negotiates, and processes change requests and change orders. For assigned projects, prepares detailed reports on project progress; identifies problems, solutions, milestones, financial cost projections, and analyses. Participates in resolution of construction contract disputes and/or claims.

4. Provides leadership, guidance, training, and support to lower level staff, including recommendations for hiring, firing, and performance management.

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its 125 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 500 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provided cancer care for nearly 60 percent of the adults and children in New Mexico affected by cancer. They treated 11,249 patients in 84,875 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. These patients came from every county in the State. More than 12 percent of these patients participated in cancer clinical trials testing new cancer treatments and 35 percent of patients participated in other clinical research studies, including tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The 130 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded almost $60 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects and published 301 high quality publications. Promoting economic development, they filed more than 30 new patents in FY16, and since 2010, have launched 11 new biotechnology start-up companies. Scientists associated with the UNMCCC Cancer Control & Disparities have conducted more than 60 statewide community-based cancer education, prevention, screening, and behavioral intervention studies involving more than 10,000 New Mexicans. Finally, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 230 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery. Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 8 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

a. Bachelor of Science in Construction Management or related architecture/engineering discipline.

b. American Hospitals Association Certified Healthcare Constructor (CHC), or ability to attain within six months of hire.

c. New Mexico General Building (GB98) Licensure and/or Qualifying Party Certification.
