Position Summary

The Quantum New Mexico Institute (QNM-I) is a Category-III research center, reporting directly to the Office of Vice President for Research, whose mission is to expand research & development, and education, as well as promote efforts to advance the local and regional quantum ecosystem to meet the nation’s economic and national security goals.The Director and six other faculty of QNM-I constitute its core Steering Committee, with membership from the Departments of Physics & Astronomy, Chemistry & Chemical Biology, and Electrical & Computer Engineering. QNM-I’s associate members consists of additional faculty at UNM and partner institutions at national laboratories, other universities, and industrial partners. QNM-I is the home of the National Science Foundation’s “Focused Research Hub in Theoretical Physics” with the goal advance cutting edge QIS research, enhancing the development of early-career scientists, and serving as “theory hub” for the QIS community. Hub activities include a postdoctoral fellowship program, hosting of seminars, visitors, and conferences. QNM-I is also an active participant in the multi-institutional centers, newly launched under the National Quantum Initiative Act.Through these center-wide grants and other investigator grants, QNM-I faculty supervise student research at all levels.


Program Management: Works with the Director and the QNM-I Steering Committee in program management, implementation, and strategic planning.

Management of Center-wide Funding: Works with the Director in financial management and reporting of center-wide unrestricted and restricted fiscal revenue and expenses. Monitors and reconciles all QNM-I and QNM-I associated budgets, labor distributions, contractual agreements, and procurement to maintain compliant oversight with sponsored project post-awards and university funding.

Daily Operations: Serves as the principal liaison between QNM-I students, faculty, staff, other UNM units, external partners, and other external constituencies on day-to-day programmatic, operational, and administrative issues.

Administrative Support: Performs administrative support tasks, serving as the point of contact for QNM-I, managing record keeping and coordinating with other support staff in purchasing of lab equipment and supplies. Manages and coordinates with other staff in arrangement of travel for students, postdocs, faculty, and others associated with the program. May perform these duties as back-up to other staff or assist staff during periods with a large amount of transactions.

Personnel: Administers hiring of QNM-I students, postdocs, and research faculty. Manages the continuing status of QNM-I personnel outside of the tenure-track faculty. Works with QNM-I PI home departments to process faculty personnel actions; includes preparing personnel action forms and submitting to home department.

Research Development: Provide pre-award support by assisting QNM-I researchers with grant preparation, grant submission, budget development, award set-up, and award management ensuring compliance with sponsor guidelines and institutional policies to enhance funding success.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 6 years of experience 2 of which are management level experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to work with diverse communities of faculty, staff, students, and others in a higher education setting.
  • Ability to problem-solve and manage multiple detailed projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Computer proficiency: experience using Microsoft Office suite programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to learn new software when required.
  • Knowledge and application of standard budgeting procedures.
  • Knowledge and experience with hiring and human resource practices.
  • Knowledge and experience of university business practices.
  • Knowledge and experience of purchasing, contract agreements, and travel procedures.
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Projects or equivalent
