Radiation Safety Officer
|Working Title||Radiation Safety Officer|
The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (HSC) Office of Research is seeking an experienced, dynamic, results-oriented professional to lead our team as the Radiation Safety Officer.
The University holds the following licenses with the State of New Mexico Environmental Department (NMED), Environmental Protection Division, and Radiation Control Bureau:
* Type A Broad Scope to include Medical Diagnosis, Therapy and Research
* Specific License for Commercial Radiopharmacy
* NRC Nuclear Research Reactor License
The successful candidate will be responsible to:
* Advise leadership on technical and regulatory issues, strategic direction of the radiation safety program.
* Maintain the institution licenses (3)
* Interpret new regulations and apply them to the program as appropriate
* Respond to emergency situations involving radioactive materials
* Manage reporting requirements to regulatory agencies
* Serve as the primary contact for New Mexico Environmental Department and other regulators
* Perform annual audit of the radiation safety program
* Oversee and manage the ongoing maintenance of Unit SOPs and the Radiation Safety Manual
* Provide leadership and supervision to the Radiation Safety personnel
* Other related radiation safety activities
|Conditions of Employment|
Bachelor's or graduate degree in physical science or engineering or biological science with a minimum of 20 college credits in physical science; at least 5 years of professional experience in health physics including at least 3 years in applied health physics.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
A. Recent experience (within 7 years) in the use of radiation in an academic/research healthcare environment and 1) experience as an RSO or 2) experience as an associate RSO.
B. Strong working knowledge of current regulations related to a radiation safety program.
C. Training as required by US NRC under 10 CFR Part 35 (.50 and .57) and 10 CFR Part 33 for a Type A Broad Scope license.
D. Experience to oversee activity under 10 CFR 35.100, 200, 300, 400, and 600(.
E. Acceptance as Radiation Safety Officer by the New Mexico Environmental Department.
F. Board certification by the American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine or the American Board of Radiology or current professional designation as a Certified Health Physicist (CHP).
G. Experience to oversee activity under 10 CFR 35.1000 (y90 microspheres).
