Position Summary

The Young laboratory is investigating a fast, ultrasensitive system for diagnosis of bloodstream infections and is in need of an organized, tactful, and motivated research coordinator to function as a liaison between medical staff, patient and family members, and other study staff. The current standard for detecting bloodstream infections is a blood culture test. Most bacteria can be detected in 2 - 3 days, but some types can take longer utilizing this system. The study sponsor, DNA Electronics, Inc. is developing a highly sensitive system that can give final organism identification, antibiotic susceptibilities, and resistance in 3 hours. Sepsis is life-threatening and early antibiotic therapy is critical to successful recovery. The goal of the research study is to test the validity of DNA Electronics, Inc.’s system and compare it to the current standard in hopes of proving the importance and efficiency of a quicker system.

DNA Electronics (Study Sponsor) would like the Research Coordinator to be able to work flexible hours in combination with study staff to cover from 8:00am to 8:00pm Monday thru Friday.

Other daily responsibilities include:

  • Become familiar with UNMH and round every other hour to the nursing units participating in the study
  • Identify appropriate subjects and consent the subject if the subject or legal authorized representative is in agreement
  • Maintain sensitivity to the patient and family members and be aware of the medical and nursing staff during the consenting process
  • Dress and act in a professional manner
  • Responsible for study cell phone for calls from the nursing units, PI, Sponsor and Monitor-prompt response is required when nursing units call regarding possible study subject
  • Ensure efficient day-to-day operations of the research and data collection activities; maintain on-site files and records, case report forms, and source documents for completeness, accuracy, consistency and compliance; address deficiencies and discrepancies, and comply with corrective action as required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential to this position.

Conditions of Employment
  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the USUNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check. Additional health screenings may be required, dependent on the nature of the research conducted, as determined by Employee Occupational Health Services.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Desired Qualifications for the position:

  • IRB and HIPPA trained; familiar with study submissions, event reporting and other IRB forms/documents
  • Employee and Student Employee scheduling & management
  • CITI and COI trained
  • Familiar with PowerChart and is able to retrieve source information and transfer source information accurately onto a data collection form following Good Documentation Practice
  • Understands medical terminology and acronyms
  • General understanding of bacteremia/septicemia
  • Trained in blood borne pathogen prevention
  • Handling, processing, and shipping of blood
  • Provide day-to-day collaboration and coordination between the PI, Sponsor, Study Monitor, UNMH nursing units where the study is being conducted.
  • Knowledge in completing TriCore Reference Laboratory requisitions and account management
  • Knowledge in writing Standard Operating Procedures/Work Instructions
  • Familiar with using an Electronic Data Capture System for data collection and entry
