Position Summary

The Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER) is looking for a creative, self-motivated and highly organized economic researcher. With supervision and working collaboratively, the candidate selected for the position will be engaged in all aspects of applied investigation of various topics relevant New Mexico policymakers. Recent and ongoing research has addressed issues such as regional economic development, economic forecasting, public finance, land use, housing, labor and health policy, and nonprofit planning and development. This position will allow for significant opportunities for professional growth.

Under direct supervision, the Research Scientist 1 uses fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of particular field of specialization to perform routine scientific research tasks requiring application of established techniques, procedures, and criteria. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are required.

Specific Duties to Include:

  • With supervision of the Director, help to develop and run economic impact models
  • Gather secondary data (e.g. Census, BLS)
  • Conduct statistical analysis of economic data
  • Support primary data collection (e.g. survey design, testing)
  • Create data tables and graphics
  • Support report writing
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible, term position. Initial term for this position is 1 year from date of hire; continuance beyond that date is subject to the Department's operational needs as outlined in UBPPM #3200, Employee Classifications and will be reviewed annually.

Conditions of Employment
  • Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check. Additional health screenings may be required, dependent on the nature of the research conducted, as determined by Employee Occupational Health Services.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; no previous experience required.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Economics or related field.
  • Advanced knowledge of the principles of economics and statistics, and their application to policy-oriented research.
  • Familiarity with qualitative research methods, including survey design.
  • Familiarity with secondary economic and demographic data sources.
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage and complete research assignments under deadlines, including coordination of students and staff work.
  • Demonstrated experience with/in:
    • Econometrics
    • Statistics and applied statistical packages, such as STATA, SAS or SPSS
    • Database management systems, such as Access, MySQL
    • Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
