Position Summary

This is an entry-level, staff position in a sponsored research office supporting one or more functional areas including, but not limited to: contract and subcontract review and negotiation, proposal review, approval and processing; award negotiation and acceptance; and award setup. This is a core function with university-wide scope. Positions in this classification are reserved for the Office of Sponsored Projects (PreAward) use only and have delegated signatory authority from the Chancellor for Health Sciences and/or the Vice President for Research for all sponsored projects.

The Office of Sponsored Projects seeks to identify up to two candidates to fill two vacancies.

This position requires critical thinking skills, problem recognition and problem solving ability, independent analysis, strong attention to detail, keen organizational skills, the ability to communicate in a positive tone, with a clear message, in oral and written communication, and the ability to exceed customer service expectations.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; no previous experience required.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Reviewing, drafting, negotiating, and/or interpreting grants, contracts, and subcontracts.

  • Analyzing award documents for compliance with University policies and other governing regulations.

  • Budget development/review and proposal review.

  • Setting priorities, completing deadlines, and making administrative procedural decisions.

  • Coordinating with key departments and stakeholders to maintain positive working relationship and to resolve outstanding issues.


  • BS/BA degree in Business, Public Administration, Legal Studies or another appropriate field, such as Economics or Finance

Knowledge/Skills/ Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Office of Management & Budget (OMB) Uniform Guidance and National Science Foundation (NSF) Grants Management Policy as it relates to sponsored projects.

  • Skill in project planning and ability to use good business judgment.

  • Superb customer service skills, using independent judgement, in a team environment, including working with faculty, administrators, accountants, and external agencies.

  • Work in a fast-paced, team-oriented, higher educational institution environment or similar.
Additional RequirementsMust be US Citizen due to possible Export Control handling.
