Position Summary

The department of Computer Science at the University of New Mexico is seeking a highly motivated and energetic professional to serve as the department’s Sr. Fiscal Services Tech. This position falls under the supervision of the Department Administrator. The Department of Computer Science is a research-active academic department and requires a Sr. Fiscal Services Tech to assist with a wide variety of accounting functions and administrative processes.

The individual in this position will initiate, process, and maintain records of a variety of complex fiscal, budgetary, and associated transactions, in direct support of the accountant and department administrator. This individual will investigate and resolve problems related to funds, budgets, expenditures, and procurement practices, and provide reports and analyses on complex fiscal issues, as assigned. It is critical that the individual be able to provide assistance in the development, implementation, and management of fiscal systems and procedures, applying basic concepts, methods, and techniques.

The successful candidate will be dependable and team-oriented, have excellent attention to detail and strong interpersonal skills, and collaborate effectively with a wide range of individuals in a very diverse work environment. This position reports to the Department Administrator but works closely in a team environment.

General Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Conducts department purchasing and reimbursement transactions and reviews purchasing documents for availability of funding, mathematical correctness, and compliance with University policy and state and federal funding requirements.
  1. Monitors revenue and expenses for departmental accounts; ensures expenditure control and compliance with funding and reporting requirements, University policy, and standard accounting procedures.
  1. Creates and processes department graduate assistantship contracts, monitors contract funding sources and completes adjustments as necessary.
  1. Responds to requests and concerns regarding fiscal transactions; analyzes and provides reports and correspondence on unresolved problems.
  1. Interacts with and trains department staff regarding financial policies and procedures; serves as liaison with client department representatives, vendors, funding source representatives in the resolution of financial issues.
  1. Maintains confidentiality of appropriate records, contracts, documents, and data in compliance with Federal, State, and University regulations and policies.
  1. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to understand and apply general accounting processes.
  • Experience with UNM accounting systems and processes (Banner, MyReports, Workflow, ePAFs, Labor Distributions, JVs, Chrome River, LoboMart)
  • Ability to understand and apply University policies and procedures and Federal/State financial regulations.
  • Experience preparing and monitoring budgets using finance, accounting, budgeting and cost control procedures.
  • Strong organizational and follow-up skills.
  • Experience with UNM purchasing card and related policies.
  • Experience reconciling, balancing and maintaining standard accounting records.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage confidential information.
