Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Press (UNMP), the largest book publisher in the State of New Mexico, is seeking a highly experienced, detail-oriented, and organized individual for its Senior Graphic Designer job.

This position is responsible for the design of book interiors and covers for approximately twenty-five new book projects per year. Responsibilities will include evaluating manuscripts for structure and content; designing interior text, composing type, and creating page layouts for full-length books; making corrections and other adjustments to page proofs as needed; creating and submitting printer-ready files; and archiving all files and recording production specs. Additionally, the position will be responsible for cover, case, and jacket design for all assigned titles as well as a portion of reprint and first paper editions. The successful candidate must have an advanced knowledge of printing, binding, and other production specs and be able to quickly assess the needs of a given project.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. A bachelor’s degree or higher in graphic design or a related field
  2. Five or more years of experience as a book designer, preferably within a university press or scholarly environment
  3. Excellent computer skills (both Mac and PC) and advanced proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator), Microsoft Office, FTP clients, database management and use, and font management software
  4. Considerable knowledge and skill in the methods and techniques used in complex design and layout for books
  5. Ability to analyze and interpret the art needs of manuscripts and other publications as well as secure necessary permissions from rights holders
  6. Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a collaborative team environment and interact directly with authors and freelance vendors (including designers, typesetters, artists, and printers)
  7. Proven project management skills, including an ability to plan and develop schedules, establish priorities, and work with other departments, authors, and freelancers to meet deadlines
