Position Summary

The Molecular Biology Facility (MBF) has served the Biology Department as a service center for twenty years. A full-time manager is part of the Center. The facility continues to provide support for teaching and research activities across the Colleges of A&S and Engineering and also the Health Sciences Center. The MBF provides service and support to both the education and research mission of UNM. It is currently the only main campus facility to provide undergraduate and graduate student training and support for automated next generation DNA sequencing technology. The MBF coordinates support for training and genomic data generation with bioinformatic and big data analyses support.

The MBF manager is responsible for overseeing the maintenance of equipment and training students on the use of the instruments.

The MBF manager is responsible for maintaining compliance with all UNM, State, and Federal regulations with regard to laboratory safety and hazard materials management.

The MBF manager participates in the selection of graduate assistants that serve in the facility, supervises their training and work schedules, and ensures their training and practice of all necessary laboratory safety protocols.

The MBF manager is expected to keep current in the new technology developments and assist the MBF Director in selection of new instrument purchases and continued maintenance of existing equipment. This may include attending annual conferences or product shows to learn about new technologies coming available and advising investigators on their use.

The MBF manager works with students, staff and other investigators to help design experimental protocols, advise on what is technically feasible, and provide alternative solutions. They also work with course coordinators to schedule student and class use of the facilities.

The MBF manager is responsible for maintaining the financial databases, working with the Biology department and UNM financial staff, provide billing information, and generally keep track of the MBF finances.

Independently employs a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures in a particular field of specialization to plan, design, and conduct research and present findings. Carries out novel or complex assignments requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures. May act in a liaison capacity with various department, divisions, and organizations.

Conditions of Employment
  • Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check. Additional health screenings may be required, dependent on the nature of the research conducted, as determined by Employee Occupational Health Services.
Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

A Masters or Ph.D. in a relevant area, such as Biology, Molecular Biology,
Chemistry, or Biochemistry.

Experience with Next Generation DNA sequencing technologies and
their applications as demonstrated by previous employment and/or publications.

Experience with bioinformatic tools used to analyze Next
Generation DNA sequencing data.

Experience with managing or supervising students.
