Position Summary

Provides signed language interpreting for deaf/ hard-of hearing University students, faculty, staff, and/or visitors, for any university-sponsored event, including but not limited to classroom settings. Provides a range of administrative assistance to department management and staff when not scheduled to interpret.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interprets and transliterates American Sign Language and signed English into oral or written language for hearing individuals or others not conversant with sign language.
  • Translates spoken material into sign language for students during any collegiate experience related activity, and in addition for faculty, staff, and others during meetings, colloquia, telephone calls, and other related occasions.
  • Abides by the principles of ethical behavior as set forth by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
  • Assists in mentoring practicum students as and when assigned; models good interpretation practices during observation, and provides feedback to students during mentoring.
  • Provides a range of assigned administrative services during hours not scheduled for interpreting; assists in the coordination and administration of on-call interpreters as assigned, in accordance with established
    policies and procedures.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Ability to interpret and transliterate proficiently in American Sign Language and Signed English.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of ethical behavior set by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent SLI methods and techniques and to mentor SLI practicum students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability provide competent signed interpreting services in a variety of operational contexts.
  • Administrative, coordinating, and record-keeping skills.

Conditions of Employment
  • If NMQA Level-4 Certified only, successful candidate must agree to obtain RID CI or CT Certification within 12 months of date of hire.
  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the USUNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Must maintain certification status.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.Certification/LicensureRID IC/TC Certification and/or RID CT or CI Certification and/or RID/NIC Certification Level or equivalent, and New Mexico Community Signed Language

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and
    responsibilities specified.
  • Certification/Licensure
  • RID IC/TC Certification and/or RID CT or CI Certification and/or RID/NIC
    Certification Level or equivalent, and New Mexico Community Signed
    Language Completed degree(s) from an accredited
    institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be
    substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
