Position Summary

The Bosque Ecosystem Monitoring Program (BEMP) is hiring an educator (bemp.org). The BEMP educator/ecologist provides environmental education instruction to K-12 (and university) students in the field and classroom. They assist in curriculum development and Next Generation Science Standard and New Mexico Common Core alignment, report writing, and engagement with partners and communities.

The Educator will assist with preparation and delivery of workshops, symposia, training and outreach events. The Educator participates in field data collections, particularly monthly monitoring, surface-active arthropod pitfall trapping, and phenology/Nature's Notebook monitoring. This position will coordinate with K-12 teachers and assist K-12 students in developing projects and presentations. Some of the education sites and schools are outside of Albuquerque but are all in New Mexico (within 130 miles of Albuquerque). Some outreach events are outside of normal business hours.

● Work is normally performed in the office or classroom; at least one week/month is outdoors in field settings, usually with students

Conditions of Employment
  • May require valid NM State teaching license in secondary education in a specific area of expertise as appropriate.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

●At least 4 years of combined education and/or experience in science, education, or related environmental field. 
●A strong foundation of ecological knowledge in either or both an Indigenous or Western science perspective. Southwest riparian ecosystems preferred. Background in ecology preferred.
●Spanish bilingualism is preferred.
●Demonstrated ability to write clearly and succinctly for a variety of audiences including an aptitude to communicate scientific concepts.
●At least 2 years relevant work experience including at least 1 year of K-12 teaching (formal or informal settings). 
●Ability to navigate uneven terrain and work outdoors under varying weather conditions.
