The University of New Mexico hasestablished branch colleges to serve the citizens of New Mexico and to provide thehighest quality of education for students pursuing post-secondary education atdifferent locations throughout the state.  Branch colleges respond specifically to the unique needs andmulticultural backgrounds of their respective communities by offering communityeducation programs, career education including certificate and associate degreeprograms, and transfer program that prepare students for upper division entryinto colleges and universities.

The UNM-Gallup Branch is currentlyseeking a highly motivated, student-oriented Tutor to work in-person in the Adult BasicEducation (ABE) Program. The tutor will provide academic tutoring services to a widevariety of individuals and groups. Creates and implements tutorial programsthat guide and assist students with homework, problem solving, report writing,and test preparation. The selected candidate will:

  • Tutors students individually or in scheduled group study sessions to review principles, solve problems, and review for tests.
  • Administers testing instruments and writes individual tutoring plans upon review of textbooks; refers students to other agencies as appropriate.
  • Facilitates reading and writing labs to develop writing, math, word processing, study, and other academic skills.
  • Leads and trains entry level tutors in strategies to accommodate alternative learning styles and disabilities.
  • Maintains and updates confidential files and records, ensuring that ethical and legal guidelines are maintained.
  • Researches and selects learning materials, textbooks, software, and equipment to facilitate tutoring; may design specific handout, study, and related materials.
  • Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of full-time college; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree or higher
  • Experience coordinating or providing tutoring services to at-risk student populations
  • Experience in higher education, preferably at a community college
  • Experience serving a culturally diverse student population, with a demonstrated ability to relate to and support underrepresented students
  • Experience developing and facilitating presentations, workshops, and/orsupplemental instruction sessions
